SUMMARY:Local Lives\, National Voices – Part Three: Glass Artist & Educator Helen Lee
DESCRIPTION:Join Jewish Museum Milwaukee for an engaging four-part series highlighting and celebrating individuals with local roots making an impact in a diverse range of artistic arenas on a national level. \nAssistant Professor Helen Lee of the UW-Madison Art Department Glass Lab will present a lecture on the propagation of glass as an artistic medium—the roots of which deeply embedded in Wisconsin and the legacy of Harvey Littleton. \nLee will discuss the spread of glass as an area of study at the collegiate level\, highlighting key figures in this history and the generations of glass artists that have evolved the material into its contemporary usage in studio practice today. Lee will discuss her own practice\, her approach to the material\, and her teaching philosophy. Lastly\, this lecture will conclude by looking at the future of glass artists with an overview of current work being produced by graduate students at the UW-Madison Glass Lab. \nHelen Lee is an artist\, designer\, educator\, and glassblower. Her studio practice explores spaces of boundary\, transformation\, and duality\, often at the intersection of language and the body. Lee holds an MFA in Glass from RISD and a BSAD in Architecture from MIT. Lee was the recipient of the inaugural Irwin A. Borowsky Prize in Glass Art in 2013/14. \n
