SUMMARY:Artist Talk + Performance: “Reggie Wilson/Fist and Heel Performance Group: POWER”
DESCRIPTION:Join the Milwaukee Art Museum for its explosive’s debut of POWER\, the celebrated dance performance work by Reggie Wilson/Fist and Heel Performance Group. Drawing on Shaker history\, African American spiritual traditions\, and Wilson’s extensive research\, POWER reimagines Shaker values\, worship practices\, and social ideals through dance\, music\, and voice. Part lecture and part performance\, this unique program explores the often-overlooked history of Black Shakers and the cultural intersections that shaped their communities. The result is a powerful experience at the crossroads of history\, ritual\, and contemporary choreography. \nThe Shakers: A World in the Making is organized by the Milwaukee Art Museum\, the Vitra Design Museum\, the Institute of Contemporary Art Philadelphia\, and the Wüstenrot Foundation\, in collaboration with Shaker Museum\, Chatham\, New York \nThis drop-in experience is included with Museum admission. On Thursday nights from 4 to 8 p.m.\, admission is pay-what-you-wish at the door\, while tickets purchased online in advance are full price. The Milwaukee Art Museum is grateful to its exhibition sponsors. \nAbout the artist\nReggie Wilson is the founder\, executive and artistic director of Fist & Heel Performance Group\, which he established in 1989. Drawing on the cultures of Africans in the Americas and combining them with postmodern influences\, Wilson creates what he calls “post-African/Neo-HooDoo Modern dances.” His work has been presented nationally and internationally at venues including the Brooklyn Academy of Music\, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival\, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts\, and festivals throughout Africa and Europe. A graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts\, Wilson has lectured\, taught\, and led community projects across the United States\, Africa\, Europe\, and the Caribbean. \nImage credits: Fist and Heel Performance Group\, POWER (detail)\, 2024. © Photo by Johanna Austin \n
