Committee on Economic and Community Development
The Milwaukee County Committee on Economic & Community Development oversees the administration of federal, state and local housing programs in the county, including the Urban Community Development Block Grant Program. Matters pertaining to economic development of Milwaukee County, including the best disposition of county properties, are decided by this Committee. It also makes decisions on the Research Park and the Airport Business Park. Meets at 9:00 A.M. on the 2nd Monday before the County Board Meeting in room 203-R of the Milwaukee County Courthouse. All matters concerning county parks and parkways are the responsibility of this Committee. Members set policy for the parks department, organized recreation, cultural activities, the University Extension program, the Environmental Services Division of the Department of Public Works and Zoo park services. Members have jurisdiction over matters concerning the conservation of all uses of energy and make recommendations relating to conservation of air, water, energy and all other resources. Green Drinks is a monthly event where you can meet people, network, do a business deal, learn something new or maybe even find a job! Check out green drinks to get an idea of the scope of this movement! Join like-minded people in an informal and unstructured setting to talk about the latest sustainability happenings in Milwaukee and globally. Meet people in various green professions. Have a drink (alcoholic or not), order food (or not), but enjoy lively conversations and good ideas. Anyone interested in green and sustainability is welcome. Dr. Gonwa will review the types of pervious pavement that are available and how its use promotes sustainable development. Various examples from the Milwaukee area will be discussed and audience members will learn about pervious pavement technologies, preferred applications and uses for each technology, and the successes and failures of different projects and pavement types. Dr. Willie Gonwa is a professional engineer at Symbiont who has worked in the fields of wastewater collection, storm water management, and flood protection since 1984. He has a doctorate in civil and environmental engineering from Marquette University. Dr. Gonwa has been responsible for the planning, permitting, design, and construction of dozens of projects involving storm water management and combined sewer overflow control. In addition to his work at Symbiont, Dr. Gonwa is an adjunct professor at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. The City Plan Commission (CPC) is the City’s official planning body established under State statute and is responsible for master planning activities. The CPC advises the Common Council on a variety of land development issues including zoning map changes, revisions in the zoning ordinance, subdivision approvals, business improvement districts, street and alley vacations, public land disposition and acquisition, new streets and the approval of development plans in certain overlay districts. Dr. Gocmen will present research which examines how open space conservation subdivisions achieve their intended goals of creating environmentally sensitive development patterns. The work investigates the environmental merits of 54 Waukesha County conservation subdivisions built between 1990 and 2005, 26 of which are paired with conventional subdivisions for an additional comparative analysis. The investigation uses spatial data and analyzes the subdivision designs for land preservation and water quality benefits. Asli Gocmen is an assistant professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and a GIS Specialist with UW – Extension’s Community, Natural Resources, and Economic Development Program. Originally from Ankara, Turkey, she has been in the U.S. since 1992. Before she joined UW in 2006, she received a master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati and a doctoral degree from the University of Michigan, both in planning, and practiced as a GIS specialist and planner at a county planning agency in Ohio. Her teaching and research interests include ecological land planning, human dimensions of natural resource protection, and GIS use in urban and environmental planning. The current legislative session ends on April 24th and legislators are considering a bill that would help save our local bus systems and allow communities to invest in critical infrastructure that will help create jobs and economic growth. At this meeting, you will learn what the current status is of the RTA bill. It truly is “all in” this time around and we need EVERYONE to help us call supporters, canvass neighborhoods and get the word out. You will also have the opportunity to enjoy refreshments and network with other members in the Coalition to learn what WE can all do together to move regional transit forward.
