MADISON – Wisconsin State Representative Mandela Barnes (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement regarding the claim that a state lawmaker with a concealed weapon permit brandished his handgun in front of visitors to his Capitol office:

“While it is shocking that to think that a legislator may have brandished a firearm while meeting with anti-gun violence advocates in our State Capitol, the real shocker is that it is even allowable for someone to legally carry a lethal weapon into an open public space like the State Capitol. This has a chilling effect on Wisconsinites who simply want to feel safe and secure in their community, especially while simply exercising their right to petition their state legislators in their State Capitol.

“Unfortunately, Wisconsin legislators who have an unadulterated love affair with guns are pushing more of them on our streets and continue to turn a blind eye to the tragic and growing epidemic of gun violence in Milwaukee and communities across our nation.

“While we should be shocked by what these Wisconsinites experienced in their State Capitol, just think about the families who far too often experience the shock and pain of gun violence tearing apart their very existence on a daily basis.

“The time is now to get serious about the safety and security of our neighborhoods by enacting common-sense solutions that diminish the scourge of gun violence in our communities.”
