Wisconsin Women’s Network Announces the 2016-17 Policy Institute and 25 Participants
The Policy Institute is an intersectional advocacy and leadership training program that teaches women how to be advocates in their communities.
MADISON—- The Wisconsin Women’s Network (WWN) today announced the start of its fifth Policy Institute and the selection of 25 new participants. The Policy Institute is an intersectional advocacy and leadership training program that teaches women how to be advocates in their communities. Over the course of several months and four intensive retreats, participants learn how to navigate Wisconsin’s legislative process in order to advance legislation to improve the lives of women and girls in Wisconsin.
For the 2016-17 Institute, participants were selected from a very competitive pool of applicants from areas across the state. The WWN is thrilled that the following women will participate in this year’s Institute: Becky Boulanger and Norys Pina of Appleton; Macy Tran of Beloit; Libby Howe of La Crosse; Elise Buchbinder, Monica Caldwell, Nela Kalpic, Alyn McCarty, Carly Meyer, Carly Sobye, and Amy Williamson of Madison; Robyn Thibado of Menomonie; Davette Baker, Natalie Czarkowski, Kanesha Durr, Catoya Roberts, Bianca Shaw, Ariana Stillman, and T.R. Williams of Milwaukee; Lynnsey Erickson of New London; Autumn Linsmeier of Oshkosh; Becky Steinbach of Phillips; Judy Gmach of Sheboygan; and Kathy Gale and Erin Miller of Waukesha.
The primary goal of the Wisconsin Women’s Policy Institute is to increase the number of women community leaders who are actively involved in the public policy process. The broad areas of focus for the 2016-17 Institute are women’s health, safety, and economic security. The Institute is led by Vicky Selkowe, a public interest attorney and lobbyist who has nearly 20 years of Wisconsin-based policy advocacy experience.
“Perhaps now more than ever, we need women leaders in Wisconsin who have the confidence, substantive knowledge, and policy know-how to effectively, strategically, and successfully advocate on issues affecting women throughout our state,” explained Vicky Selkowe. “I’m delighted to be part of the Wisconsin Women’s Policy Institute, and look forward to helping the Institute’s participants gain the skills they need to transform their communities and our state.”
The first session of the Policy Institute begins on Friday, December 2nd in Madison. Through these retreats, participants get hands-on practice, interactive learning, and connections to leaders in numerous fields. Past speakers at the Institute include both Republican and Democratic legislators, agency heads, Supreme Court Justices, stakeholders, lobbyists, and community activists.
