Wisconsin Juniors Volleyball Welcomes 3,000 to Winter Classic Jan. 16-18
Olympic Gold Medalist Misty May-Treanor to conduct sold-out clinic Friday night
Volleyball teams from all over the Midwest descend on the Wisconsin Center this weekend, January 16-18, for the Wisconsin Juniors Winter Classic. More than 3,000 athletes, coaches, staff and spectators are expected to be in attendance at this annual event, which brings teams of ages 12-18 together for friendly competition in Open and Club divisions.
According to Wisconsin Juniors Volleyball Executive Director Jim Neave, “In three years the Winter Classic has grown over 50% from 120 teams in 2013 to over 190 teams in 2015. This is evidence that the sport is on the rise both regionally and nationally. If you’re a volleyball enthusiast or just want to see what this is all about, come check it out this weekend.”
Competition starts at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday and will end around 8:00 p.m. each day. The public is welcome to attend.
A very special highlight for the participants this year is the Dream in Gold Volleyball Clinic given by Misty May-Treanor at the Wisconsin Center from 5:00–8:00 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16. The clinic is sold-out and closed to the public. Approximately 120 young athletes are participating in this clinic to learn from three-time Olympic Gold Medalist Misty May-Treanor and her coaching staff. The Dream in Gold Clinic Series represents the highest quality in youth sports education in the professional sports world. Acting as a mentor to young athletes, Misty provides hands-on instruction, quality direction of the experience and her ability to connect with youth. According to Misty, “These kids inspire me. They are my heroes and the reason that I am excited about the future of volleyball.” Misty doesn’t just talk volleyball. She teaches the young athletes about self-respect, setting goals and going after their dreams. Misty encourages young people to believe in their ability to succeed through the values of hard work, dedication and perseverance.

Due to the high level of competition, the Winter Classic also provides an opportunity for college coaches from around the country to recruit players from the many athletes who will go on to compete at the collegiate level.
Wisconsin Juniors encourages the tremendous growth of the sport by offering state-of-the-art equipment to train athletes at the Lakeview Rec Plex in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, just minutes north of the Illinois border and 30 minutes south of Milwaukee. Directors, coaches and staff are committed to providing athletes with the highest level of practice training, strength and conditioning, tournament competition and recruiting services.
According to the organization, Milwaukee is a great fit for this event at this time of the year because of the hotels connected to the Wisconsin Center. Economic impact to the city is estimated at $626,000.
