Wendell Harris urges Milwaukee residents to speak for MPS at JFC hearing

I have been encouraging concerned people of Milwaukee to oppose the draconian budget cuts to K-12 public schools and the cuts to the University of Wisconsin system.

MILWAUKEE, WI Wendell Harris, candidate for the Milwaukee Board of School Directors from the second district issued the following statement on Tuesday, March 16:

For the past week I have been encouraging concerned people of Milwaukee to oppose the draconian budget cuts to K-12 public schools and the cuts to the University of Wisconsin system.

Today I am asking people to take a stand in favor of having highly qualified teachers in front of all of our students.  Specifically the legislature should:

Cut out of Walker’s budget a provision that will lower the quality of teachers in our public schools. Walker is proposing that instead of having licensed teachers teach our 6th through 12 grade students, that anyone with a bachelor’s degree and who passed a “test” should be able to teach middle and high schools.

We know the quality of teachers is a key factor for the success of our students. Governor Walker should be promoting ways to encourage people, particularly our young people from Black, Latino, Asian and Native American communities to become teachers. He could do this through a variety of means, such as loan forgiveness programs.

I encourage people to write, call and email legislators and join me and hundreds of other Milwaukeeans at the March 20 budget hearing of the Wisconsin Legislative Joint Finance Committee at Alverno College.
