Victory Garden Initiative Celebrates Five New Urban Orchards
VGI builds communities that grow their own food, creating a socially just, sustainable, healthy, community-based food system.
Milwaukee. Wednesday, February 17, 2016 — In four short days, Victory Garden Initiative (VGI) is celebrating. At the sixth annual Fruity Nutty Affair on February 20, 2016, over 200 of Milwaukee’s most generous community members will toast to the winners of five community orchards, won via VGI’s Fruity Nutty 5 Contest. At Villa Filomena, 1119 N. Marshall St., Milwaukee, a location sparkling with Milwaukee history, VGI will reveal the orchard-winning neighborhoods—and the next chapter of the VGI story.
That February night, friends and neighbors will raise a glass to raising orchards for a variety of reasons: Fruit and nut trees provide nutritious food, serve as a source of oxygen, protect against soil erosion, and keep neighborhoods cool in the summer. Planting trees strengthens relationships between neighbors, encouraging community. In service of this mission, guests will enjoy small plates from Milwaukee’s favorite locally focused restaurants, meet the Fruity Nutty characters, dance to live bluegrass music, and win silent auction prizes focused on healing, growing, exploring, and more.

This event features food by Amilinda, Beans & Barley, Braise, Glorioso’s, Irie Zulu, Kasana, Simple Cafe, Two Girls and a Farm, and Wolf Peach, with dessert by Le Reve and Purple Door Ice Cream. It will feature silent auction prizes from acupuncture to blacksmith lessons, cooking classes to water adventures.

VGI’s Fruity Nutty Affair is one of the most enjoyable fundraising events in Milwaukee. I have attended for several years running, and have been very impressed with the food, the music,and most of all, the warm, friendly atmosphere and sense of fun! And it’s definitely for a very good cause.
