Statement on Wisconsin’s Compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act

“Our goal should be full compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act.”

By - Jul 15th, 2016 03:51 pm

(MADISON) – Sen. Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement regarding the report from the Legislative Fiscal Bureau on the Wisconsin Department of Corrections’ (DOC) compliance with the federal Prison Rape Elimination Act

“Our goal should be full compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act. Especially in light of the fact that our juvenile corrections facility is already under federal investigation, I am deeply concerned that DOC has not made any progress worth mentioning in a year and a half in protecting juvenile offenders from rape in adult institutions. I am also concerned that the department hasn’t figured out a better solution to keeping transgender inmates safe other than isolating them in segregated facilities.

Our institutions face many barriers derived from segregation policies and staffing challenges that exacerbate these problems. We can and must do better. We should not make these changes just because the feds are telling us to. We should make them because it’s the right thing to do.”

  1. Salute to the advocates recognizing there needs to be an update evaluation for rehabilitating criminals.
The question is what do we expect of the criminal who is asked to adjust to society with a positive attitude and new skills after they have served their time of rehabilitation?
I watch the animal rights advertising organizations sharing their stories of abused animals and the stories of hungry kids overseas recognizing the support that is needed for these rehabilitative supportive organizations.
Perhaps we need more film makers share the stories and advertising of our rehabilitative services to change our services that seems to be remote and just wishful thinking.
Perhaps creating contests for entrepreneurs may offer a new perspective for rehabilitating criminals? Ideas worth sharing that requires new perspectives as shared with http://www.ted.com global talks sharing solutions.
