Statement on Ruling Allowing Voters Who Cannot Obtain ID to Vote by Affidavit

MADISON – In a victory for voters, a federal judge ruled today that citizens who have trouble obtaining identification under Wisconsin’s strict voter ID law will be able to vote by affidavit. We thank our friends at ACLU-Wisconsin for bringing this case on behalf of Wisconsin voters.
“This was the right ruling. Allowing citizens who simply can’t obtain an ID to vote with an affidavit is the least that is needed to make the Wisconsin voter photo ID law less unfair. We hope lawmakers will enact additional changes in the next legislative session to make voting more accessible to all eligible citizens,” said Andrea Kaminski, executive director of the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin.
“This ruling provides a safeguard for those citizens who have the most difficulty complying with the voter ID law. In the meantime, it is crucial that we continue to inform and assist citizens on how to comply with the ID law.”
