Sen. Lena Taylor statement on call for creation of Office of African American Affairs

(MADISON) – Today, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted on several bills which will have a significant impact on the African American Community. Additionally today, Milwaukee County Supervisor Khalif Rainey and Milwaukee Alderman Willie Wade held a press conference with State Representative Leon Young (D-Milwaukee) to call for the creation of an office on African American Affairs. Following the day’s events, Sen. Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement:
“Every day at every level of government we see the disparate treatment of African Americans played out in Wisconsin. While Representative Leon Young (D-Milwaukee), Supervisor Khalif Rainey and Alderman Willie Wade held a press conference to call for an office on African American Affairs, today in the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee, we voted on bills that increased strip searches, increased prison sentences for certain crimes and redefined adequate parenting, all of which we know have and will disproportionately impact African Americans.
“Today’s concurrent events reaffirmed the Black Caucus’ 2011 request that Governor Scott Walker address Wisconsin’s dismal outcomes for black Wisconsinites. Although the request resulted in the Minority Unemployment Task Force (MUTF), today’s actions reaffirm Wisconsin’s disparities for people of color touch more than unemployment and requires a targeted approach.
“As I stated when I became the co-chair of the MUTF, we need a coordinated effort across all levels of government to address the issues at their roots and solve the racial disparities that exist throughout all facets of our society. I congratulate Supervisor Rainey and Alderman Wade for highlighting the issue.
“I look forward to working with Rep. Young and my state legislative colleagues to create a vehicle that will help to reverse Wisconsin’s dismal records of being the worst place in nation to raise a black child.”
