Representative Lisa Subeck Circulates Bill Banning Semiautomatic Weapons

Semiautomatic assault weapons are a class of firearms that are designed to kill large numbers of people quickly.

MADISON –Today, Representative Subeck (D-Madison), along with Representatives Terese Berceau, Melissa Sargent and Chris Taylor, circulated an Assembly bill that would ban the transportation, purchase, possession, or transfer of semiautomatic assault weapons in Wisconsin.
“Our nation has watched as community after community has had to confront the tragedies that occur when weapons designed to kill large numbers of people quickly get into the hands of a dangerous person,” said Representative Lisa Subeck. “No Wisconsin community should ever have to face such a tragedy at the hands of someone armed with a semiautomatic assault weapon.”

Semiautomatic assault weapons are a class of firearms that are designed to kill large numbers of people quickly. They have been used in many high-profile shooting incidents, including the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut; the 2012 Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting; the 1999 Columbine High School massacre in that state; and the 1993 office shooting at the 101 California Street building in San Francisco.

“I can conceive of no legitimate reason that any citizen should need to own or use a semiautomatic assault weapon,” said Rep. Subeck.

A review of mass shootings between January 2009 and January 2013 by Mayors Against Illegal Guns found that incidents where assault weapons were used resulted in 135% more people shot and 57% more killed, compared to other mass shootings.

“Wisconsin families want to know that they and their children are safe whether they are home, at school, at work, or out in the community,” said Rep. Subeck. “This bill is one of several critical reforms needed to eliminate gun violence in our state.”

Attached is a copy of the bill, which will circulate for co-sponsorship for approximately two weeks before introduction.

  1. Anna says:

The 2nd Amendment does not need nor rely on your opinion of a weapon and in an of itself, allows us as citizens to purchase weapons. Semi-automatic weapons are not assault weapons. One trigger pull, one bullet.

  2. Tyrell Track Master says:

I’m not a fan of guns but the term “semiautomatic” is constantly thrown around in certain circles and people seem to have no idea what it means, it just sounds dramatic. ALL handguns (well , almost all) are “semiautomatic”. It just means that every time you pull the trigger a bullet gets fired.

  3. Chris says:

Jabba the Assemblyman wouldn’t know a semiautomatic weapon if it stole her donut.

  4. WaukAnon says:

This has a very, very poor chance of going anywhere. Not just because of the state legislature composition, but this would have serious issue with the Supreme Court’s Heller decision.

Add the likelihood that another case (a municipal ban) is primed to head to the Supreme Court in the near future, it would be a seriously poor choice to even propose something like this.

  5. ScottLC says:

That enormous cow, driven by her massive ignorance, is coming for your guns.

Oh, no, she’s going to send other people to do it for her. People with guns.

“But, but, but, the left doesn’t want to take your guns” The left also can’t control it’s own crazy…as proven with here.

  6. Liloldlady says:

Personal snark and insults about body size or weight????? So mature.

  7. Will Hans says:

This is a joke, right? So… my shotguns I use for hunting would be illegal, my .22 I use for hunting would be illegal, my sidearm I use in the criminally infested cities of Milwaukee and Madison would be illegal? I’m saddened by the ignorance this poor woman demonstrates with her proposed bill. I have stopped becoming angry at these people and have channeled the old anger with a true sense of pity for they would rather be the victim then be able to provide for their families and defend themselves and the ones they love.

  8. Michael King says:

Quote “I can conceive of no legitimate reason that any citizen should need to own or use a semiautomatic assault weapon,” said Rep. Subeck.

I can think of one good reason. To stop people like you from destroying the United States constitution. Go to Hell Subek

  9. AD says:

Sandy Hook and Aurora were not only false flags, but Sandy Hook never happened! I dare anybody to prove otherwise because you cannot!

  10. GT Tactical says:

How will more laws change the actions of a person already unwilling to obey the laws already in place. The only people effected by the ridiculous bill are law abiding citizens who pose no threat.
