Rep. Shankland Responds to Release of Gov. Walker’s Receipts from State after Failed White House Bid

"Given that the Department of Administration has released receipts, I hope this means the governor will consider supporting the Wisconsin Taxpayer Protection Act."

Madison- State Representative Katrina Shankland (D-Stevens Point) issued the following statement today in response to Governor Walker’s remarks that he has repaid the State of Wisconsin in full for campaign expenses charged to the state’s Department of Administration during his failed 71-day presidential run:

“Since suspending his failed presidential campaign on September 21, 2015, 126 days have passed. Today, we are only just learning that Governor Walker has reimbursed the state for all travel- and security-related expenses paid for by Wisconsin taxpayers. Given that the Department of Administration has released receipts, I hope this means the governor will consider supporting the Wisconsin Taxpayer Protection Act, which I authored. Moving this bill forward would prevent future abuses of taxpayer dollars by ensuring more up-front transparency with political travel. This legislation would require reimbursement to state taxpayers in a much more timely fashion.

“Under the bill, any state official who is running for a federal office must regularly disclose all campaign and legislative travel itineraries and reimburse the state for any campaign expenses every month. These are taxpayer dollars that should be invested in valuable state programs instead of bankrolling a politician’s travel across the country on the taxpayer’s dime. It’s time to prevent future abuses of Wisconsin taxpayers’ hard-earned money, to ensure the people of our state aren’t getting taken for a ride by a politician who is more interested in pursuing their personal ambitions instead of serving the State of Wisconsin.”
