Rep. Peter Barca Statement on Labor Committee Public Hearing

“This is another shameless attack by Republicans on Wisconsin workers.”

MADISON – Today Assembly Democratic Leader Peter Barca (D-Kenosha) released the following statement on the new bill that restricts local governments’ ability to require public labor agreements:

“This is another shameless attack by Republicans on Wisconsin workers. When our middle class is suffering, when wages are depressed and our economy is lagging behind our neighbors, it is unfortunate that one of the GOP’s first priorities is trying to pass legislation that nearly certainly will assure workers make less.

“With one of the most diminished middle classes in the entire country, Democrats believe we should prioritize investing in worker training to close the skills gap and raise the minimum wage. Not only does this bill diminish wages, it also once again limits local control. We need real solutions to help people have family-supporting jobs.”
