Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin Celebrates Women’s Equality Day

MADISON – Women’s Equality Day (August 26) is a celebration of the adoption of the 19^th Amendment. While this was a landmark achievement for many white women in this country, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin recognizes women of color, people with disabilities, formerly incarcerated people, and people for whom English is not their first language all were routinely denied their right to vote – and many still face barriers to voting today.

More than a dozen states, including Wisconsin, have enacted voter suppression laws since 2013. These laws take many forms — from requiring photo IDs to vote, cutting back on early voting, eliminating same-day registration, and more — but they are all part of the same concerted effort to strip Americans of their rights.

“Women’s Equality Day reminds us that the fight isn’t over. Although women have made great strides, many still face barriers to their fundamental rights – including the right to vote,” said Tanya Atkinson, chief external affairs officer of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin. “Planned Parenthood is proud to work with organizations and people across Wisconsin who are engaged in voter education and civic engagement. We believe that everyone should have the right to vote, no matter their political beliefs, and no matter their background.”

Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin sees 60,000 patients annually. Many of these people are young voters, people of color, immigrants, and people struggling financially. These are the same people who face hurdles when trying to participate in the political process because of discriminatory voter suppression laws.

“Voting is not only a fundamental right; it’s necessary to ensure our democracy. Voting reflects your personal values. It’s also a mechanism to transform your community, and have a say on the issues that matter to you most,” said Atkinson. “There are many issues at stake in this election, including women’s health, economic justice, and immigration reform. Voting is a way to ensure your voice is heard.”
