MADISON – Today, Rep. Katrina Shankland and Sen. Nikiya Harris Dodd introduced the 12-Month Contraceptive Care Act, a bill that would allow women to fill their birth control prescriptions for 12 months at a time. In response, Nicole Safar, government relations director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin (PPAWI) released the following statement:

“PPAWI is grateful to Rep. Shankland and Sen. Harris Dodd for their leadership on improving women’s health care access. For birth control to be effective, consistency is essential. For many women, especially those in rural parts of the state, receiving only 30 or 90 days of contraception during a trip to the pharmacy can be an obstacle to effective use.

“A recent study shows that allowing women to have a one year supply of birth control is associated with a 30 percent reduction in unintended pregnancy.

“Women’s heath expects agree: This common sense legislation would remove barriers to birth control and increase contraceptive access in Wisconsin. Most importantly, it would make sure that each Wisconsin woman has the ability to decide if and when to start a family.”

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin is the advocacy arm of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin. PPAWI engages in legislative and educational activity and works to elect candidates to office that support these goals.
