Paul Ryan and Donald Trump.

Mount Pleasant, WI- Ryan Solen, Democratic nominee for Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District, learned that Speaker Paul Ryan will attend the annual “Fall Fest” with Donald Trump, Governor Scott Walker, and several state Republicans. Senator Ron Johnson, struggling to retain his seat against Russ Feingold, will also attend. Naturally, Ryan Solen has a number of questions.

This is the first time all Republicans will campaign together, even though they are sharply divided on various issues such as trade and NATO. Paul Ryan has been critical of many of Trump’s comments about minorities and the nominee’s refusal to disavow support from white supremacists. So why, Ryan Solen wonders, would the Speaker campaign alongside this man?

Paul Ryan’s press indicates he is none too pleased to appear with Trump. The release lists all politicians attending. Trump’s name appears last accompanied by the text, “Presidential nominee, Donald J. Trump will also join Wisconsin Republicans at the 1st Congressional District Republican Party of Wisconsin Fall Fest.” The release tersely continues, “All questions related to Mr. Trump should be directed to the Trump campaign.” But if Paul Ryan has endorsed Donald Trump why is he distancing himself? Ryan Solen wouldn’t endorse anyone he wouldn’t campaign for.

Lately, Paul Ryan has praised Trump. The speaker said at a recent press conference, “Donald Trump give [sic] a spirited voice to those of us who don’t like the status quo, and I see emerging in front of us the potential for what a unified Republican government can get you… I think he passed a number of thresholds.” Ryan Solen would disagree that Trump gave “a spirited voice” and define it more as “unhinged” and “frightening”.

The Speaker’s view is strikingly different from that of most conservative pundits.  Bill Kristol said, “I’m sure Trump lost it. He choked.”

Has Paul Ryan simply lost his way when it comes to Trump? However reluctantly his endorsement was given, it was given but he could disavow and be the leader he is alleged to be. America, and Wisconsin in particular, deserves a leader they can depend on to stand up against party politics and stand up for them. Paul Ryan just demonstrated that he is unfit to continue in office and it is time to elect Ryan Solen to be the leader the people need.
