MILWAUKEE (April 6, 2015) – Yalimar Borges, a student at Milwaukee Public Schools’ Hayes Bilingual School, is one of seven “Rising Star” nominees for this year’s 35th Annual Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) Awards.

Last year, Borges was one of only a few MPS students selected to perform in the annual WAMI Youth Showcase of talent at Milwaukee’s Summerfest.

The WAMI Awards Show will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 19 at Turner Hall in Milwaukee. Awards will be presented to musicians and industry professionals in 34 categories.

Nominees are selected based on voting by the WAMI membership, made up of music industry professionals from around the state.

Since appearing at Summerfest, Borges has performed in a “She Rocks” showcase at The Bay and on the Viewer’s Voice local cable TV show twice.

Her nomination comes as MPS is increasing access to music education. The district has added more than 140 art, music and physical education teaching positions to schools over the past three years.
