MPS schools celebrate reading as American Education Week comes to a close

Community members help students celebrate reading; share their professional experiences

By - Nov 19th, 2015 11:24 am
Students at two Milwaukee Public Schools are thankful for reading and will celebrate throughout the day on Friday, November 20, 2015. Friday is the last day of American Education Week and the last day of school for MPS students before the Thanksgiving break.

Fifty African-American women from many professions will meet at Thurston Woods Campus at 8:00 a.m. to participate in a “Community Reading Challenge” sponsored by Milwaukee Municipal Court Judge Valarie Hill. The women represent a variety of different career paths including medicine, law enforcement, business ownership, social services and elected office. The reading challenge begins at the school, located at 5966 N. 35th Street, at 8:15 a.m. on Friday.

The “Community Reading Challenge” at Thurston Woods Campus follows a similar event hosted by Milwaukee Municipal Court Judge Derek Mosley at Siefert School in October.

Hawley Environmental School celebrates its annual “Thankful for Books” day on Friday, too. Guest readers, including community members, MPS Regional Superintendent Reginald Lawrence and State Senator Lena Taylor will join the festivities from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Hawley is located at 5610 W. Wisconsin Avenue.

Hawley students will be reading all day. The event was created by a former Hawley teacher who wanted to share his love of books by creating activities and programs that celebrate the gift of reading.
