Milwaukee County’s Housing Division has received the Wisconsin Fair Housing Award for an agreement to “affirmatively furthering fair housing” in the County, Supervisor Pat Jursik said today.

“The new agreement is a recognition that Fair Housing is not just for the largest city in Milwaukee County, the City of Milwaukee, but it is a shared responsibility throughout the county,” Jursik said. “In reality, we are all part of the Housing Plan for the home we all call Milwaukee County.  Even the suburbs recognize that they want to be the suburbs of Milwaukee, not the Suburbs of Nothing.  The big picture is that we care about Milwaukee and all the people of Milwaukee County.”

Jursik said Fair Housing laws were key to breaking barriers and allow everyone to have a chance to live where they want to live.

Jean Wolfgang, Milwaukee County Housing Program Manager, said Milwaukee is in a good position to become a leader in fair housing.

“As an Urban County jurisdiction Milwaukee County has a unique opportunity to address fair housing in one of the most segregated communities in the United States by working directly with 17 suburban communities that make up the Urban County and HOME Consortium,” Wolfgang said. “As an Urban County jurisdiction Milwaukee County has a unique opportunity to address fair housing in one of the most segregated communities in the United States by working directly with 17 suburban communities that make up the Urban County and HOME Consortium.”
