MILWAUKEE – As part of Marquette University’s Family Weekend, College of Nursing students will participate in a Commitment to the Profession Ceremony, which will include a “blessing of the hands.” The ceremony will be held Sunday, Oct. 4, at 1:30 p.m. at Church of the Gesu, located at 1145 W. Wisconsin Ave.

Students, faculty and staff in the College of Nursing will come together and state their commitment to nursing in the Marquette tradition through high quality, compassionate care and nursing leadership that promotes health, healing and social justice.

Marquette’s nursing students are pledging their commitment to the profession at a time when there is a nursing shortage throughout the United States. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing has projected that the shortage will grow to between 260,000 to 1 million registered nurses by 2025, potentially putting patient lives in jeopardy. This shortage is being brought on by an aging nurse population—a professional nurse’s average age is 47.
