MADISON – Mass layoffs in Wisconsin have increased dramatically in 2015 leaving thousands of Wisconsin workers unemployed and looking for work. New data from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development shows that 9,040 Wisconsin workers have been affected by mass layoffs and plant closings so far this year compared to 6,186 in all of 2014. Rather than working to protect jobs and strengthen the middle class, legislative Republicans have focused their efforts this fall on eliminating government accountability and covering up political corruption.

“Republicans are out for revenge on good government after years of scandals, criminal convictions and embarrassing headlines,” said Senate Democratic Leader Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse). “Unfortunately, their focus on political retribution has distracted from important economic issues facing Wisconsin families and local businesses. These latest numbers prove that we need to generate economic growth and put an end to Gov. Walker’s taxpayer subsidies for companies that outsource Wisconsin jobs.”

Earlier this fall, Democrats put forward the Badger Blueprint, a plan to grow the middle class, expand economic opportunities and strengthen investments in infrastructure. The Badger Blueprint includes numerous proposals to lower student loan debt, improve health care access, increase retirement security and expand affordable childcare options.

“Wisconsin Republicans can’t ignore reality any longer,” added Sen. Shilling. “Our neighboring states are investing in education, boosting family wages and seeing strong economic growth. Yet here in Wisconsin, thousands of families are being laid off and left behind because Gov. Walker and legislative Republicans are distracted by their divide and conquer political tactics. It’s time our leaders focus on what’s really important to families in Wisconsin and end the misguided attacks on good government.”

  1. Gary Mason says:

A lot of the problem lies with or poor education system: In your home town and employer is getting people that can’t read a ruler and don’t want to show up for work on time. They can make out well on unemployment so why show up for work.
