MILWAUKEE… Neutral, objective, accurate—this is what visitors believe exhibitions in museums and galleries to be. However, exhibits embody perspectives and politics beneath the surface. The newest exhibition at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design exposes these hidden points of view with unique takes on the traditional form, function and visual language of exhibits.

Just the Facts, on view in the Frederick Layton Gallery January 9 – March 4, hosts an Opening Reception during Winter Gallery Night on Friday, January 20, 5 – 9 p.m. an a panel discussion with exhibit artists, local curators and exhibit designers Thursday, February 2, 6 p.m. in the MIAD Student Union.

Participating artists Tony Matelli (MIAD alumnus), Mark Dion, Beauvais Lyons, Diane Fox and Jennifer Angus take both narrative and non-narrative approaches in examining the exhibition space and its engineered presentation as factual.

Curator Mark Lawson, MIAD Director of Galleries, wants viewers to think critically about fine art and natural history with help from Just the Facts.

“There’s a point of view that’s being expressed, and you have to put it into context, not just accept things at face value.”

The Opening Reception of Just the Facts is Winter Gallery Night, Friday, January 20, 5 – 9 p.m. The exhibition runs through March 4 in the Frederick Layton Gallery. The exhibit and corresponding events are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Free gallery tours are available at miad.edu/gallerytours.
