Admission includes access to the sculpture garden and house. All events listed below are free with admission unless otherwise indicated. Memberships are available.
HOURS
In January, the Lynden Sculpture Garden is open from 10 am to 5 pm every day except Thursdays (closed). We will be closed January 1 for the holiday.
A NOTE ON ICE SKATING
We will offer ice skating on one of the ponds at Lynden on Saturdays and Sundays when weather and ice conditions permit. Please visit us on Facebook for ice skating updates.

PAT HIDSON + TORI TASCH: DRAW PRINT FOLD PAINT

Pat Hidson and Tori Tasch shared a year-long residency at Lynden that ended last May. It was the first time that Hidson, who is primarily a painter, and Tasch, who makes books and prints, had worked together, but they built their collaboration around their shared concern for the environment and a deep interest in the natural world. For this exhibition, each artist returns to her solo practice, with the occasional nod to the residency in the content of their separate projects and in a small installation of some of the cyanotype prayer flags they made while at Lynden. Their outdoor flag installation remains on view in the birch grove throughout the exhibition. The garden–a place where Hidson spends a lot of her time–is central to the imagery and geometry of her exuberant two-dimensional works. The exhibition includes nine paintings and ten drawings made over the last two years. For Tasch, creating books is a daily ritual and ecological investigation. Her passion for repurposing materials and using layered printmaking processes merge in a series of handmade books: the diminutive insect books that she has paired with objects found onsite, and her Centerfold Series of 365 butterflies. Each butterfly is fabricated from old centerfolds and the repurposed pages of science textbooks. The butterfly-books are symbols of transformation; when they are shown together, they mark the passage of time.

7th ANNUAL WINTER CARNIVAL
Saturday, January 28, 2017 – 10 am-4 pm

Lynden welcomes winter with a day of outdoor art-making, studio activities, scavenger hunts, tours and tree-walks, and whatever other winter activities–ice skating, painting the pond, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing–the weather permits. This year the highly participatory, artist-driven carnival, curated by recent MIAD graduate Reece Ousey, features an artist’s version of an outdoor mini-golf course created by Miguel Ramirez–a winter-friendly extension of previous indoor projects Ramirez has exhibited in Milwaukee. Current and former Lynden artists-in-residence, including Sara Caron and Pat Hidson and Tori Tasch, will be on hand, too. Caron is planning a walking performance, and Hidson and Tasch will offer a pressure-printing workshop. The Little Havana Express food truck will be serving Cuban cuisine–sandwiches, empanadas, and hot beverages–from 11 am to 2 pm.

Enameling is a timeless art form that involves sifting colored glass onto a copper base and fusing it in a kiln to create shiny, colorful works of art. In this workshop, Leslie Perrino teaches the basics of enameling, covering a variety of techniques including stencils, sgraffito, threads, silver foil, screens, and decals. You will complete sample pieces for practice, and can then choose from a variety of projects ranging from wearable items to small bowls. No experience required, and all materials supplied.

In the last session of the Conservation Framing Series, Bruce Knackert, Lynden’s collections manager, will talk about the five factors harmful to artwork on paper (light, acid, relative humidity, temperature, pests) and expand on the techniques and materials discussed in previous sessions.

What better way to experience Lynden in the winter than by lantern light? Join Jeremy Stepien in the art studio beginning at 3 pm for this popular annual family workshop to make a lantern (or bring your own). At 5 pm we embark on a lantern-lit walk through the garden, led by naturalist Naomi Cobb. She will guide you safely through Lynden’s back acres, introducing you to the mysteries and unique features of outdoor life after dark. We’ll end with a bonfire and hot cider.

The 40 acres that house the Lynden collection of monumental outdoor sculpture are also home to many birds, insects, frogs, mammals and plants. Naturalist Naomi Cobb offers a nature program that explores a different theme each month, taking into account the changing seasons, and provides an opportunity for those with very small children to engage in outdoor play and manipulation of art materials. The theme for January is feed the birds.

Squirrel feeders are the focus of our annual winter wood workshop. We’ll learn the basic carpentry skills necessary to build squirrel feeders and–unfettered by practicalities–some furniture for the future tenants. Additional ornamentation and sculptural enhancement will transform these ordinary objects into unique squirrel dining spaces.
COMING UP IN FEBRUARY
We will have our regular activities–Art Drop-in (including an Extended Art Drop-in on February 20), Tuesdays in the Garden, Dog Day–but otherwise February is given over to our Fiber Fest. Even our family workshop is about weaving friendship bracelets (February 12). Adult workshops include textile marbling (February 4); Navajo tapestry weaving (February 5); two kinds of felting (vessel-making on February 11 and functional felting on February 19); and sculptural crochet (February 18). We wind it up with a Free Family Day & Fiber Fest Finale on February 26, when all are invited to participate in a knitathon and yarnstorming.
