Tory Folliard Gallery is pleased to announce JAMES WINN: New Paintings. Opening with an Artist’s Reception on Saturday, March 7th, the exhibition will include panoramic paintings of the Midwest and upstate New York as well as work from his Lotus series.

James Winn is one of American’s great contemporary landscape painters. He works within a venerable tradition to render serene fields and prairies, infusing vistas with a sublime stillness and luminosity. Inspired by the mid Nineteenth Century American art movement Luminism, his paintings are governed by the rules of form and content. The second is always determined by the first.

By using a bird’s eye panoramic view with an emphasis on the horizontal and strict tailoring of the formal elements, Winn captures the vastness and richness of the countryside. Moving beyond the quotidian, his invisible brushstrokes over the course of many thin “wet on wet” translucent layers express the constant, subtle change of light in the early evening sky.

“It’s those quiet moments of the mystery of the last light that represent my latest efforts: to present that moment when nature whispers that there is more in the world than what meets the eye.”

James Winn was born in Hannibal, Missouri in 1949. He studied at the Academy of Art in Chicago in the late 1960’s and later received his MFA from Illinois State University where he studied with Midwestern master Harold Gregor. He has participated in numerous exhibitions since the early 1980’s and has mounted solo shows in New York, Chicago and Milwaukee at the Tory Folliard Gallery. His paintings are in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Illinois State Museum, the  Cedar Rapids Art Museum and many more museums and private collections throughout the Midwest.
