In Defense of Same Day Registration

Mayor Barrett, government and community leaders, speak out against Governor Walker’s proposal to eliminate same day registration

Wednesday at 11:00 AM, Mayor Tom Barrett, Neil Albrecht (Executive Director of the City of Milwaukee’s Election Commission), State Rep. Jon Richards, members of the African-American Civic Engagement Roundtable, and community partners will come together to speak out against public comments made by Governor Scott Walker that support the elimination of same day registration in Wisconsin. Walker made the comments while speaking to out-of-state donors in California.

Same day registration is one of the major reasons that Wisconsin has among the highest democratic participation in the nation. Members of the African-American Roundtable will ask that election commissioners and county clerks across Wisconsin speak out publicly against ending same day voter registration.

What: News Conference to highlight the historically high voter participation in Wisconsin and how getting rid of same day registration would limit voters’ access to the polls.

After a brief media conference, participants will encourage residents to sign petitions in favor of keeping Wisconsin’s same day registration law.
