Hamilton applauds Senator Baldwin’s Stronger Way Act legislation

Statement from Common Council President Ashanti Hamilton July 15, 2016

By - Jul 15th, 2016 04:52 pm

Today I had the pleasure of attending a news event announcing new legislation that Senator Tammy Baldwin is introducing to fight poverty in America. Senator Baldwin’s STRONGER WAY ACT is bold legislation to put real solutions in place to create opportunities for all. Transitional Jobs – something I and my colleagues have been focused on in Milwaukee for the past few years – are a central plank of Senator Baldwin’s important initiative.

Additionally, the legislation was drafted after the Common Council passed a resolution during the last term urging our congressional delegation to act on the key issue of jobs and job creation.

A young man from Milwaukee who attended today’s event spoke eloquently about how important it has been for him – for his quality of life, for his self-esteem, for his dignity – to have secured a meaningful transitional job. This is what the STRONGER WAY ACT can help do for more young men and women in Milwaukee, and it is why I am solidly supporting the initiative.

I would also like to thank the key local partners who helped make today’s announcement possible – Community Advocates, the Council for Children and Families, the Milwaukee Urban League, and UMOS.

I invite my fellow citizens to find out more about the STRONGER WAY ACT and to urge its quick passage in Congress.
