MILWAUKEE (Oct. 26, 2016) – To enjoy the fall color and learn about the landscape of Whitnall Park, the public is encouraged to put on their hiking shoes for Glacial Ghosts, an active and educational program, Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9–11 a.m., starting at the Whitnall Park Golf Course Parking lot at 6751 S. 92nd St. in Franklin.

Participants will journey back through time to the Ice Age, when glaciers were in retreat and mammoths roamed. On the hike, Howard Aprill of the Wehr Nature Center will point out kettles, moraines, erratics, or rocks carried by glacial ice, and other marks left by glaciers 15,000 years ago. Aprill will also discuss their effect on agriculture, construction, and drinking water.

“People think the Ice Age is ‘ancient history.’ Not true! Our Ice Age legacy is visible today. It’s literally right under our feet,” Aprill said.

Participants will hike over uneven terrain and possibly muddy trails. The program is recommended for families with children age 8 and up. Participants are reminded to dress for the weather.

Admission is $10 per person, $7 per Milwaukee County Resident, and $5 per member of Friends of Wehr. Registration is required by Thursday, Nov. 3.
