Madison – Today State Senator Tim Carpenter (D-Milwaukee) issued the following statement regarding the ongoing transportation budget crisis.

“The ongoing budget crisis at the Department of Transportation is already a disaster, and has all the hallmarks of getting worse before gets better. It is time to recognize that this mess needs immediate attention.

What is troubling is that Governor Walker does not seem to have any sense of urgency in this matter.

Given the crisis, and Governor Walker’s apparent indifference, it is incumbent that the transportation budget be more transparent to public scrutiny, not less. As such, it is alarming that the Transportation Projects Commission, of which I am a member, has not met in quite some time. It seems to me that the Governor is trying to obfuscate the dire situation at the DOT and hide from Wisconsin taxpayers his mismanagement.”

It is my fear that Governor Walker will once again, as he did in 2014, hope to sneak in his budget a provision to target the Transportation Projects Commission for the axe. This would thereby cut off public oversight of this agency in crisis when oversight is needed most.

Senator Carpenter additionally repeated his call to separate the transportation budget from the general budget and to review all of the cost overruns one by one.
