MADISON – In light of testimony given yesterday in the federal court hearing challenging Wisconsin’s restrictive voter photo ID law, where a former GOP staffer testified that several Republican legislators were “giddy” at the prospect of making it harder to vote, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Martha Laning released the following statement:
“I am appalled that Republican leaders would celebrate restricting voters access to the polls and purposefully erect barriers to the ballot box for their own political gain. It is shameful that Republicans are going as far as to rig elections in their favor by attacking the sacred voting rights of all Wisconsinites.
“Today’s testimony proves that Republican’s voter photo ID law is wholly undemocratic and disparages a value shared by all of us in the Badger State: that everyone, regardless of zip code, gender, or race has the right to have their voice heard through the power of their ballot.
“Democrats in Wisconsin believe that everyone who is eligible to vote, and wants to cast a vote, should be able to do so. Our state’s leaders should be tearing down the barriers that make casting a ballot difficult, not creating more obstacles to prevent students, seniors, and the poor from having equal access.”

I am back with my same comment on voter suppression. As a poll worker I have witnessed no one turned away for voter ID; however, numerous people have been kept from voting, dissuaded and turned away by the chaos at the City of Milwaukee polls. The poll workers,mostly older retired people, are forced to work without breaks for 12 to 15 hours a day.Many of them are poorly trained, or simply unqualified to be responsible for our constitutional right to vote.I compare my experience in the suburbs where I was a poll worker for many years with my experience in Milwaukee, where I live now and it is night and day. The Democratic Party has a responsibility to make certain the polls are staffed by competent people;that there is adequate staff, and everyone who comes to the polls has the opportunity to vote. Until they do this they have no right to complain about the very few who were prevented from voting due to an ID. First, let us get the people to the table so they can show their ID.
It seems very odd to empower a political party to safeguard peoples’ voting rights, that’s just asking for fraud. Me thinks you’re just looking for an excuse to blame the Democratic party for something, really anything that’ll stick. You remind me of a drunk relying on a streetlight… for support not illumination.
