Common Council President Murphy announces election for 15th District
The start date for circulating nomination papers was February 11.
In his first act as Common Council President, Alderman Michael J. Murphy has ordered a special election for the vacant seat in the 15th Aldermanic District, which was vacated by departing Common Council President Willie L. Hines, Jr. If needed, a primary election will be held on April 1, with the special election to follow on April 29.
“It’s important that we move swiftly to find a new representative for the 15th District,” President Murphy said. “The people of the 15th District deserve to have a voice representing their interests on the Common Council as soon as is feasible.”
Any person who intends to run for this office must file a Campaign Registration Statement and Declaration of Candidacy with the Election Commission prior to raising funds or incurring expenses related to the campaign. In addition, candidates must file between 200 and 400 valid nomination signatures in order for their name to appear on the ballot. The start date for circulating nomination papers was February 11.
Nomination papers must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on March 4 to the Election Commission, the office of which is located in room 501 of City Hall, 200 E. Wells St.
“I appreciate President Murphy making this election a top priority,” said Neil Albrecht, Executive Director of the City of Milwaukee Election Commission. “If two or more candidates submit sufficient nomination signatures and are certified to appear on the ballot, this timeline will allow us to schedule the primary to coincide with the Spring Election on April 1. This would save significant taxpayer dollars.”
Until a new representative for the 15th District is elected, the City Clerk’s staff will work to provide services to residents of the 15th District.
