COLLECTIONS: JOURNEYS/JOURNALS, a collaborative exhibit by seasoned artist, Sandra Wyss, and emerging artist, Karen Fischberg, aims to activate and challenge the mind’s eye.  Their collection of paintings is slated to open at the Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts, 926 E. Center Street, with a reception on July 8, 6-9pm.

Having over 20 years of work experience as a Graphic Designer and Illustrator, Sandra Wyss offers paintings and drawings that, in her words, “are inspired by experiences, memorabilia and travels. I am drawn to capturing the culture, architecture, landscape, and cityscapes when I travel.”

With collegiate degrees in Commercial Art and Graphic Design from UW-Milwaukee and MATC, Wyss finds comfort in the classics, clearly visible in this collection.  She explains, “My expressionistic textural painting style pays tribute to Chagall, Soutine and the German Expressionists utilizing acrylic, oil, pastel, and mixed media collage mediums.”

Wyss continues to hone her skills at MIAD, taking painting and other fine art classes when the opportunity arises.  She also enjoys the creativity of set design and painting for local community theatre groups. She enjoys the stage as well, sometimes finding time to participate on stage in a theatre production, something she finds rewarding and challenging.

Art exhibitions include several Gallery Nights at Village Church and Pyramax Bank. She has exhibited in Starving Artists Art Fair, Donna Lexa Memorial, Walker’s Point Center for the Arts, South Shore Gallery, The Painted Bean in Grafton, and Inspiration Studios in West Allis.

Emerging artist, Karen Fischberg is finding her way in the art community while completing her undergraduate studies at MIAD. Heavily influenced by Cy Twombly, sculptor Berlinde De Bruyckere, and inventive sketchbook artist, Pat Perry, Fischberg engages the idea of being experiential, experimental, and of letting go—letting go of the fear of damaging or “ruining” her work.

“I have used this time to allow myself to damage my work in order to make it better,” explains Fischberg. I wanted to let the flaws of the work become its strengths and the highlights and headline of the pieces. I wanted the work to be like an allegory to a person. We are all precious. We all have flaws, scars, and many layers of time and effort that we have put into ourselves.”

While paint is her typical medium of choice, Fischber is also a printmaker and drawer, costume designer and creator, as well as a dancer and a lover of movement and aerial dance–a maker and an artist before anything else.

This is Fischberg’s first gallery exhibition.

Exploring the relationships of mind and space (journeys) and of mind and body (journals), Wyss and Fischberg stress how memories interact with spaces, combining them to make visual work that is engaging and appealing. They have combined their journeys and journals into a collection to inspire viewers to search and dig through the marks on the canvas to a deeper understanding of the art…and of their own personal journeys.

COLLECTIONS: JOURNEYS/JOURNALS will be exhibited at the Jazz Gallery July 8 through July 23. Opening Reception, free and open to the public, will take place Friday, July 8, beginning at 6pm.  Refreshments will be served. Additional viewing hours are Saturdays, July 9, 16, 23, from Noon to 5pm.
