Coalition of Photographic Arts Gets Happy

Group supports Milwaukee Film Festival documentary with photo project

By - Sep 21st, 2016 03:15 pm

Milwaukee, WI: The Coalition of Photographic Arts (CoPA) is a proud Community Sponsor of the Milwaukee Film Festival, and the documentary Happy by Milwaukee filmmaker Michael Patrick McKinley.

Happy tells the uplifting story of Leonard “Porkchop” Zimmerman, a flourishing artist in Augusta, GA, who created a graphic robot character that became his alter ego when tragedy struck. A sticker followed, spreading a message of positivity throughout Augusta, then the U.S., and ultimately the world.

CoPA photographers were tasked with photographing the iconic “Happy” sticker around Milwaukee. McKinley and Zimmerman then selected 32 photographs out of all the entries to be displayed in one 6’ x 10’ piece during an exhibition of Zimmerman’s artwork at the Pfister Hotel Pop-Up Gallery.

Mayor Tom Barrett participated in the project, supporting CoPA, the Milwaukee Film festival and the documentary Happy by having his portrait made with the Happy sticker on his desk.

Zimmerman is CoPA’s featured speaker on September 27th at the organization’s monthly meeting when he will discuss art and its power to heal, connect people, tell stories and express emotion.

CoPA is a Milwaukee-based fine art photography organization that provides over 150 members with the tools, resources and experiences to become better photographers. www.copamilwaukee.com
