The City of Milwaukee is acquiring a tract of land in the Bay View neighborhood that will maintain public access and provide a permanent buffer between homes and the commercial activity at the Port of Milwaukee.

The 2.7 acre parcel at 1314 East Conway Street is currently owned by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. It is located along Highway 794, immediately west of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Reserve facility at the south end of the Hoan Bridge.

“This is great news for the neighborhood. It assures this park-like setting will continue to be available for quiet outdoor activity,” Alderman Tony Zielinski said. “Bay View has a good mix of parks and open spaces. We want to make sure that will be true for generations to come.”

The plan now being considered by the Milwaukee Common Council includes maintaining existing deed restrictions that prohibit billboards or other permanent structures. It also requires the land be permanently open to the general public for nature-based activities. The City will pay just $425 for the property.

The Council’s Zoning, Neighborhoods and Development committee will review the proposed acquisition in the coming weeks. The full Council and Mayor Tom Barrett could approve the sale by the end of March.
