Celebrate Cuba to Fend Off Those Winter Blues

Latino Arts welcomes a performance from Grammy-nominated Adonis Puentes & The Voice of Cuba Orchestra, a mixed media exhibition from artist Dara Larson, and a special Lunch & Learn event about The Current State of Cuba

MILWAUKEE – November 18, 2015 – Latino Arts heats up this December to close the Fall 2015 season with a performance from Adonis Puentes & The Voice of Cuba Orchestra and the exhibition opening of Alverno Professor of Art and RedLine Milwaukee mentor Dara Larson’s Gardens, Gods, & Grids:

Retracing Nature, Culture, & Infrastructure in the Americas on Friday, December 4 in the Latino Arts Auditorium & Gallery.

Plus, Latino Arts will host Lunch & Learn: The Current State of Cuba, a panel discussion moderated by TMJ4’s Charles Benson, on Wednesday, December 2 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Latino Arts Auditorium with insight into Cuban culture and the progress that has been made in repairing U.S.-Cuban relations.

Adonis Puentes is a Grammy-nominated vocalist and composer from Cuba who weaves passionate, hypnotic Salsa and Son melodies through jazz arrangements. With a worldly experience that shines through their performances, Adonis and The Voice of Cuba Orchestra share syncopated rhythms, explosive horn arrangements, and harmonious swells of piano and guitar that is as emotive as it is danceable. Adonis Puentes & The Voice of Cuba Orchestra will perform in the Latino Arts Auditorium on Friday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. and in student matinees on Thursday, December 3 at 10:30 a.m. and Friday, December 4 at 10:30 a.m.

Tickets for evening performances in the Latino Arts Auditorium are $15 for general admission in advance ($20 at the door), $10 for seniors 60 and over and full-time students in advance ($15 at the door), and $8 per student in groups of 10 or more. Our Dinner & A Show special features Café el Sol’s Friday fish buffet before the performance (beverage and gratuity not included) for $25 in advance ($30 at the door). Advance tickets prices are available until 11:59 p.m. the day before the show.

Dara Larson is a Professor of Art at Alverno College and a mentor at RedLine Milwaukee who retraces photo documents and past artwork from multiple years of travel in the Americas to create a series of time collages, merging photographed reality with imaginary and psychological worldviews. The works of Gardens, Gods, & Grids: Retracing Nature, Culture, & Infrastructure in the Americas overlap and paste together the most powerful symbols and themes from her journeys through North, Central, and South America. Inspired by land use and city story, Larson explores historic and contemporary themes that incorporate natural and built environments with art, healing, and spirituality. The exhibition’s opening reception will take place in the Latino Arts Gallery on Friday, December 4 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Gardens, Gods, & Grids will be on display from December 4 through February 26.

Exhibitions in the Latino Arts Gallery are open Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. for a suggested donation of $1.

Start the celebration of Cuban culture early with TMJ4’s Charles Benson as he moderates Lunch & Learn: The Current State of Cuba, a discussion with Ricardo Gonzalez and Dr. Raúl Galván about the current state of U.S.-Cuba relations on Wednesday, December 2 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Latino Arts Auditorium.

Last December, President Barack Obama announced his intentions to begin to normalize relations with Cuba. This panel discussion will what has changed and what still needs to be done; the regulation and potential for travel to Cuba; the state of Cuban society, art, and culture; and trade potential for Wisconsin businesses and beyond.
