Milwaukee Public Library Seeks Artists for Public Art Project at New East Branch
MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Public Library (MPL) is seeking Wisconsin artists for two public art pieces for the interior of the new East Branch. MPL is announcing a request for qualifications for artists who have the experience and ability to create site-specific public art. The submission deadline is Monday, July 15th.
Construction of the Standard @ East Library, the development that will house the new East Branch of the Milwaukee Public Library, begins in August. The library space will be completed in late fall of 2014. The new branch will incorporate the hallmarks of a 21st century library model – technology-rich, highly flexible spacing used to create a forum for community engagement and collaborative work areas, a smaller print collection, areas for each age group and self-service technology. The branch will be reflective of local history and culture.
“Public art is an important part of expressing history and culture in the heart of one of the eastside’s thriving business districts,” said Library Director Paula Kiely.
“Our goal is to identify artists to work collaboratively with us to create art that encompasses the spirit of discovery, learning and literacy and reflects the library’s culture of inclusiveness. We welcome all who enter regardless of age, interest, or education.”
Public Art Program Details
Up to six finalists will be selected by a public art selection committee, who will review artist portfolios the week of July 15th. The finalists will be asked to submit site-specific concept proposals at a public meeting. The library values public engagement and transparency throughout this process and community input will be considered in the final determination.
