Alarmed and angered by a recent sexual assault, residents of Bay View will take back the night on Monday, joining together as a community to encourage neighbors to look out for one another and demonstrating their commitment to maintaining Bay View as one of Milwaukee’s safest neighborhoods.

Alderman Tony Zielinski said that residents, victims’ rights groups including SlutWalk Milwaukee, police and other government officials will meet at 2500 S. Howell Ave., the scene of the recent attack, at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, August 26. Carrying signs, they will walk through some of the area’s most prominent nighttime destinations in a show of support for the victim, solidarity as a neighborhood and uncompromising resolve to see the perpetrator arrested and prosecuted. Their route will take them north to E. Becher St. before they turn back to the south and wrap up with a debrief at the Sugar Maple, 441 E. Lincoln Ave.

“This is one of the safest, most lively neighborhoods in the city,” Alderman Zielinski said. “We are going to catch the perpetrator of this crime and see that he is prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Bay View is organized and committed to making this a neighborhood where everyone can feel safe at any time of day or night, and we look out for each other here.”

Following the debrief at Sugar Maple, Alderman Zielinski said a shuttle will be available to take participants back to their cars. All residents are encouraged to take part in the march, and media attendance is invited.
