Alderwoman Coggs launches 7th Annual Freedom Essay Scholarship Contest
The deadline for the scholarship is Friday, August 7, 2015
Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs is challenging recent Milwaukee high school graduates to analyze the concept of “freedom” for the 7th Annual Freedom Essay Scholarship Contest. The scholarship application is now open to current and recent college bound, high school graduates in Milwaukee. The essay’s topic of “freedom” will give graduates the opportunity to reflect on what freedom means to them, and suggest (in 1,000 words) what they can do to combat and prevent prejudice, discrimination and violence in our world today.
The deadline for the scholarship is Friday, August 7, 2015. Alderwoman Coggs created the contest when she took office as a dedicated investment in opportunities for students.
Alderwoman Coggs said the scholarship effort is continued annually to acknowledge our students thoughts on freedom, and the power they have as a youth population to combat the injustices of our world today. “The scholarship essay contest is a way for our youth to express their thoughts on freedom, and cultivate those thoughts into possible leadership roles as students,” she said.
Two $500 scholarships will be awarded and winning essays may be published, Alderwoman Coggs said.
Applications are available beginning today—online at www.city.milwaukee.gov/district6, at all city libraries and at many high schools and colleges—and must be returned and postmarked by August 7, 2015.
The application is open to students who reside in Milwaukee and attended a public, private, parochial, or home school, or who participated in a high school correspondence program in the City of Milwaukee. Preference will be given to residents of the 6th District (see map at: www.city.milwaukee.gov/district6).
