Alderman Witkowski schedules report on MPD records failure

Alderman Terry L. Witkowski, chair of the Common Council’s Public Safety Committee, announced on Tuesday that the committee will hear a report on the malfunction of a Milwaukee Police Department video recording system.
“I’ve spoken with Common Council President Michael Murphy, and we agree that this is a matter of sufficient interest to members of the council,” Alderman Witkowski said. “I do find it hard to call one crashed computer system a ‘scandal,’ even as some of my colleagues seem fixated on branding this some sort of conspiracy.”
Milwaukee Police Department administration officials will make the report to the Public Safety Committee at its regularly-scheduled meeting on Thursday, May 21 at 9:00 a.m. in room 301-B of City Hall. Alderman Witkowski said he did not anticipate having to use his subpoena powers to compel anyone to testify.
In January, a hardware malfunction caused data stored on the Milwaukee Police Department’s MediaSolv system to become inaccessible, including the video recordings of suspect interviews in high-profile criminal cases. The hardware was sent to a vendor, who is working to recover the lost data and has nearly completed the work. Police officials have told the media that they are not aware of any cases that have been compromised as a result of the malfunction.
