South Side residents with memories of the Airway Theater, the Palomar Roller Skating Rink, the pole sitter at Southgate or the days of the North Shore Line will have two unique opportunities in December to share their experiences and pictures and reminisce with their neighbors.

Alderman Terry L. Witkowski invites residents to attend a pair of community discussions about the local history of the South Side’s Garden District. The first, on Tuesday, December 8, will center on the history and development of the S. 27th Street corridor, while the discussion on Thursday, December 10 will cover the Town of Lake area, featuring resident and retired TV commentator Wayne Youngquist.

“The Garden District has a rich, fascinating history in the postwar era,” Alderman Witkowski said. “Unfortunately, the day will come when those with memories of it aren’t able to share their stories any more. These discussions are an opportunity for us to come together as neighbors, share stories and photos, and reminisce.”

Alderman Witkowski said staff from Milwaukee’s City Channel will be on hand to document the discussion, using it to create informational programming that will be available on cable or online and preserving the oral history for posterity’s sake.
