    too bad his name is tied to a prototypical suburban department store that couldn’t be less urban.

    I worked at the Regency House for 7 years. Herb is a very private man and rarely chatted with us. Very generous at Christmas, usually giving us cards with hundred dollar bills. I went up there for a plumbing issue and he sat in his chair reading a book while I addressed the issue. Nice pad with a great view. People would often say that he was into something shady but I worked there for many years and saw what people were into (lots of stories about that place) but never saw Kohl doing anything seedy or shady. Most days he came home and went to bed and that was it. I always got a kick out of the fact he had so much money and he drove a 10 year old buick. 🙂
