Alice Austen, award-winning author of the plays Backwards, A Hole in the Sky, Algiers, Foul and Water, is a Chicago playwright — who lives in Milwaukee. It sounds like a contradiction, but it’s not! She talks to Mark Metcalf about her roots in Milwaukee (her great-great grandfather was Milwaukee’s first doctor, and wrote an early history of the city), how our theater community differs from Chicago, the shifting view of regionalism in theater, our global arts influence and more.
